Gulfport Little Theatre is proud to announce its season finale, Steel Magnolias, the dynamic comedy/drama by Robert Harling that unravels the layers of tangent relationships among a group of very different Southern women whose lives are presented through the prism of their one common social setting, Truvy Jones’ in-home beauty salon.

It’s Spring of 1987 and in the northwestern Louisiana parish of Chinquapin there’s excitement and anticipation in the air, particularly at Truvy’s Beauty Spot where the ladies are prepping for Shelby’s wedding.  The salon chat is quick, upbeat and funny, revealing diverse personalities and a colorful picture of the quirky locale.  Suddenly, Shelby has a diabetic episode that confronts the eternal hope of spring with the reality of serious medical challenges that could—and does—impact her life.  Shelby’s journey is the backdrop of the story— from her wedding day to the birth of her child, through her diabetic episodes, dialysis, kidney transplant and untimely passing.  Based on Harling’s real-life experience with his sister’s death, the play is a testament to the love, friendship and support of the female characters who, as the title suggests, “are as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel.”

The show features a remarkable ensemble cast of Coast veterans and newcomers, including Salina Domino Sullivan as Truvy Jones, Lauren Falks as Annelle Dupuy-Desoto, Denise Dunaway Ozerden as Clairee Belcher,  Meaghan Parker as Shelby Eatenton-Latcherie, Rebecca Courtney as M’Lynn Eatenton, and Susan Smith as Ouiser Boudreaux.  Their performances are rich with the humor and warmth of old friends loving, mourning, and celebrating life.

The show is directed by Cal Walters. All performances are at the theatre located at 2600 13th Avenue in Gulfport (behind Chris’ Beauty College on Pass Rd.).  The show runs May 11-13 and 18-20, with curtain for Friday and Saturday performances at 7:30pm and Sunday matinees at 2:00 pm.  Admission is $16.00 for General Admission, $13.00 for Seniors/Military w/ID, and $11.00 Child/Student w/ID.  There is a special Mother’s Day ticket promotion for the May 13th performance available online only.  Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling the Gulfport Little Theatre Box Office at (228) 864-7983 or by purchasing tickets online.
